The Elmer family

In 2016 we received an enquiry about John Elmer and his family who lived in Stonehouse during the 19th and 20th century. We were able to find some information about the family including that they built a house in Gloucester Road called Elmonte (later renamed Almonte) This house was off the main road opposite the turning to Grosvenor Road. John Elmer ran a market garden business in the grounds. It was demolished to build houses on the Little Australia estate.

John (“Jack”) Elmer played football for Stonehouse and also conducted the Stonehouse Band. He died in 1955.

The sisters, who now live in Australia, are still interested in finding out more about John Elmer and his family so if you know anything please contact us and we will put you in touch with them.

Jane Scantlebury (nee Turl) sent us her memories of living in “Almonte”.
